2.1 Critical Evaluation of Arguments
This module contains links to two textbooks on critical thinking and indicates which sections are most relevant to thinking well about ethics.
Section 1: Learning Objectives
This module contributes to addressing the following Ohio Introduction to Ethics TAG Outcomes:
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to examine questions and issues from diverse perspectives.
- Comprehend, analyze, and evaluate diverse philosophical arguments regarding ethical matters within the contexts and traditions those matters are cast.
- Develop an ability to (re)present complex philosophical ideas, theories, and perspectives fairly, objectively, and critically.
Section 2: Recommended Textbook Resources
This is a textbook for logic and critical thinking. Chapter 1 discusses the basics of evaluating arguments – including a section on paraphrasing arguments. Chapter 4 discusses logical fallacies.
This is a critical thinking textbook. Chapter 1 gives an overview of critical thinking basics. Chapter 4 gives an overview of logical fallacies. Chapter 9 gives an overview of moral reasoning. And chapter 10 discusses cognitive biases.
