This activity has students think about how young children who have not yet learned multiplication would solve the problems using objects or drawings.  Each problem addresses a different model of multiplication.

This activity is designed to help students see why the commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication are true. 

This is an ambitious activity in which we attempt to use these problems to first introduce students to the concept of multiplying fractions by building on the definition of multiplication for whole numbers, then help review the pictures they've drawn to solve each problems for patterns in their work.  These patterns should eventually yield the usual multiplication rule for fractions.
